When Clay Sings

Baylor, B. (1972). When clay sings. New York: Macmilan Publishing Company. 16 pp. ISBN:
 0-684-18829-5.
This is an older book, a Caldecott Honor Book, about Prehistoric Indian pottery. Every piece of clay is based on someone's life. The Indians would relate their ancestors to their lives now through the pottery that they made. The book is great as a resource on types of pottery during Prehistoric Indian times because all of the illustrations in the book are based on actual pottery. The pottery is all from the American Southwest area. The story is about why/how they used or made the pottery. This would be a great book for an art teacher! As a social studies teacher I would use this for a lesson on Pre-historic Indians or on the American Southwest. I could also use it for a unit on artwork in the Americas. This is a good book because it tells a story and is historically accurate.
